Concluding our summer-long Global Private Equity series, Merrill DataSite is pleased to close the loop on this discussion with a viewpoint from Asia. Earlier conversations emanating from the United States (in May '12) and Europe (in July '12) yielded tremendous insight into the various trends affecting private equity, which as a whole has continued to sputter despite some signs of recovering market fundamentals. Through this final instalment, our panellists will address the opportunities and challenges in the private equity market in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and South-east Asian countries.
Asia continues to play an increasingly vital role in the world economy, boasting powerful demographic and economic trends that represent incredible opportunities for the private equity community. The Asian private equity market has also proven to be relatively robust in a difficult global economic environment. According to a survey conducted by Prequin in 2011, over 1,700 private equity funds were seeking nearly $685 billion in commitments in the region. This represents a 22% rise in year-on-year capital commitments. But with these opportunities come many of the same risks that face other less developed, emerging economies. Given this environment, how have both regional and foreign private equity professionals uncovered opportunities and adapted their tactics to find success in this exciting, but challenging part of the world?
