A digital transformation needed for Oil & Gas sector

Nav Dhillon, Merrill Corporation | January 16, 2018

Merrill Corporation proudly sponsored the World Oil & Gas week event, which took place at the Greenwich Intercontinental O2 in London on the 3rd and 4th December 2017. This was a defining event for the global Oil & Gas, finance and investment communities and, as such, it's recognised as a must attend energy event. Strategically placed at year's end, the conference was specifically designed to review the previous 12 months and identify emerging corporate development opportunities.

Focusing on the topics of cost reduction & technology, corporate development & financing, the 2-day event was well attended by 600 delegates and 700 dinner guests and provided a platform for valuable networking opportunities and insightful discussions.

As the agenda in the developed world begins to shift under increasing public pressure to acknowledge and react to environmental concerns, the Oil & Gas industry sees itself facing many challenges and increasing opportunities. One of the key challenges for companies is understanding the capabilities and investment required to move forward with the implementation of digital technology.

Mike Hinchliffe, Regional Head of Sales for Merrill in EMEA, spoke on the panel “Digital Technology - Lead the Way or Risk Being Left Behind” to highlight the growing need for technology in the Oil & Gas industry and to help businesses understand how they can overcome some of the challenges by working with trusted digital partners. During the session, panellists determined that digital technology should be moved to the forefront of the agenda to address the requirement for better cost management and efficiency.

Within the current climate, there is a need for Oil & Gas companies to refocus and embrace change to increase productivity. Working with long-established digital partners like Merrill Corporation enables that focus to shift without taking emphasis away from their core business.

Merrill Corporation works closely with the Oil & Gas sector to provide digital solutions that help Oil & Gas companies and their investors review and restructure their businesses to remain viable in ever-shifting market conditions.

The ABCs of SPACs and de-SPAC’ed Entities

With the change in market conditions over the last year (increased inflation, interest rates etc.), there is concern that companies who went public via a SPAC in 2020 and 2021 will not be able to continue their business operations due to a lack of free cash flow or will face de-listing because their stock is not in compliance with the NYSE or NASDAQ requirements. These companies may need to explore alternative options, such as rescue capital raises, full company sale to a strategic, bankruptcy, and PE take-private options, etc.
