Merrill Corporation is pleased to present the Monthly M&A Insider for January 2018, exploring the global M&A market with respect to the numbers, movements and trends that marked December M&A activity. December dealmaking helped give 2017 a much-needed final boost, with five megadeals -- but there was still a year-on-year decline. As part of the overall annual decline, cross-border activity also saw a small margin drop. Private Equity showed an exceptionally strong performance across the year, with buyouts and exits well exceeding 2016 total deal values.

Key highlights within the January 2018 Monthly M&A Insider:

  • Energy, Mining and Utilities was the top-performing sector during 2017 -- even though none of the top 10 deals for the year were from EMU
  • North America, the greatest contributor to global M&A activity during the year, with 43.3% market share.

  • Private Equity had an exceptionally strong year -- with 3,297 buyouts worth US$511.7bnRises in both volume and value were experienced in Asia (excluding Japan) and Central and South America.
