POV: It's your first week in IB
The class is Investment Banking 101. The school is The Better Way to M&A Academy. And the location? In the deep end. Welcome to your first week at your first investment banking job! You're in for a wild ride. Here's what to expect.
Unique culture
So many names, so many job titles. Investment banking is its own microcosm. Embrace it, and make friends early. Work pals get you through the rough days, and in time will prove essential for your future career - whether it is writing a reference, or making a key introduction. Be friendly and open and your extrovert energy (real, or channeled) will pay off.
Long hours
You thought college was tough? IB has a reputation for a reason. And that's why those who prepare for the slog will reap the benefits. Hit up Trader Joe's early on Sunday and stock up on easy, quick meals. Think pre-cooked proteins, healthy fats, fibrous veggies, and vitamin-packed fruits. Prep and pack your meals and snacks while you catch up on Love Island Sunday night. Your Thursday-self will thank you for the needed nutrients.
While you're at it, schedule some exercise into your work week. Pilates, yoga, or a Barry's Bootcamp class with friends will do wonders for your energy and mood!
Tech stack overload
Investment banks, like all of corporate America, use loads of software every day. Whether it's Salesforce, Workday, Slack, or something else, you will be creating accounts and logging into so many systems you may have never heard of. Pro tip: Datasite has a slew of free apps designed for efficiency gains. From one login and user name, access tools like Rapid Redact, E-Signature, PDF to XLS, and much more. You'll appreciate the precious hours these tools can save you.
Meanwhile, get a leg-up by watching these videos about data rooms (also known as VDRs). Get comfy, you're going to be spending A LOT of time in data rooms!
Lean on AI
It might have been frowned upon in your undergrad days, but it's all the rage on Wall Street. Make it work for you, not against you. Find out what tools your office offers (ChatGBT, Microsoft Copilot, etc), and practice your prompts. Even data rooms are leaning into AI; Datasite has had integrated AI since 2019, and we're adding more AI-powered features as we speak.
Hang in there, and enjoy the ride. You're joining a competitive but rewarding field of work. Embrace the chaos, absorb everything you can, and if you're unsure of anything, just consult The Better Way to M&A Academy.
